The de Havilland Chipmunk is a Canadian-designed tandem seat single engine trainer which first flew in 1946. Initially produced by de Havilland Canada.
The Chipmunks built for the RAF were built under licence by de Havilland in the UK. They went onto build more than 700 Chipmunk aircraft.
Although a training aircraft it did have a few more exciting roles. A number of aircraft were equipped with cameras and used in Berlin to conduct covert reconnaissance missions.
Most people today will remember the Chipmunk for its role with The Air Training Corps and University Air Squadrons. Many thousands of cadets had their first experience of flying an aircraft in a Chipmunk. It continued in this role until 1996.
There are still many airworthy Chipmunk aircraft flying today.
