Aviation enthusiasts flocked to Solway Aviation Museum on Friday as the Mayor of Carlisle officially reopened the attraction for its 2026 season.
Eager visitors were already lining up at the gates by 10.30am on March 27 as Mayor Jeanette Whalen cut the ribbon at the much-loved museum, which sits beside Carlisle Airport off the A689 between Carlisle and Brampton.
The reopening comes with improvements to the site, including a refurbished western section of the museum building and an expanded gift shop and cafe area at reception.
Dougie Kerr MBE, chair of the museum, was on hand with his team of volunteers to welcome the first visitors through the doors.
He said the attraction drew 11,000 people last season and paid tribute to those who have helped keep it going.
Marking the opening, Mr Kerr said: “Here we are again, 2026, who’d have thought we’d still be here now, but here we are.”
“Thank you to Jenkinson’s (the airport owners) for letting us stay.”

Previous visitors will notice the improved museum space as well as a much larger reception area, stocked with aviation memorabilia, toys, merchandise and locally-crafted wooden items.
Admission prices remain unchanged at £8 for adults and £5 for children, with concessions available. Dogs are welcome in outdoor areas.
The museum is home to a wide range of restored aircraft and aviation exhibits, with visitors able to spend hours exploring both the outdoor displays and the collections inside.
Among the highlights is the Vulcan, where cockpit tours are included, while indoors there are interactive displays, historic aviation technology, models, parts and memorabilia, including a collection of ejector seats.
Mayor Whalen praised the work of the museum team and said the attraction had something for all ages.
She said: “I was honoured to be asked by Dougie to officially open the museum. I’m fascinated by the collection of planes that are here, and all of the restoration work constantly going on behind the scenes.”
“Dougie and the team do an absolutely remarkable job. They deserve all the plaudits they get.”
“Kids absolutely love climbing into the cockpits and playing with all the gadgets.”
“I’d urge anyone with a passing interest in aviation, or even history in general, to come and visit.”
